Matt Kelleher fires his pottery in atmospheric kilns and considers how the ceramic surface will change during the firing as he constructs. This train of thought motivates the inspiration for different curves and alterations. During this workshop, he will demonstrate a variety of wheel throwing techniques and share his thought process in alluding to these changes in surface. Whether this be making two forms with the intention of firing them side by side or leaving a protruded belly to catch the flame’s attention, Kelleher’s vessels are designed to encourage a wide breath in surface variety.
