It is for anyone who has always wanted to try throwing or someone who wants to branch out into other art forms. The open studio is run by our staff who will help give tips if needed, but people will be encouraged to embrace the messy nature of clay, have fun, try on their own, and experiment to their heart's content!

Ceramic Sculpture: Metaphor Led Making
Instructor: Mark Corwine
September 4 - November 16
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00
Students of all levels are welcome to join this class. Beginner students will learn to construct sculptural forms, and functional if they wish, with traditional handbuilding techniques. Experienced students will continue to develop their own skills and processes with assistance from the instructor.
In Mark’s own work, he utilizes metaphor as inspiration for conceptual meaning. With this in mind, he is able to speak a message to the viewer, and portray a sense of drama. Slips and glazes contrast with the red clay he uses thus increasing the variety in the color palette and help to emphasize different elements of the sculpture.
Cooking: Homestyle Dinners with Hannah
Instructor: Hannah Robinson
September 4 - November 16
Fridays 5:00-7:00
Students of all levels are welcome to join this class to learn how to prepare a variety of homestyle meals. Starting with pairing and graduating to fileting, as the class progresses, everyone will exit with a new recipe under their belt perfect for the chilly seasons ahead.
Hannah enjoys cooking homestyle meals because they make her feel cozy and warm. As the head chef for the WCAC café, she likes taking a break from making soups and sandwiches to stir up a meal that's a bit more hearty. Some of her favorite combinations to prepare are steak and potatoes, chili and cornbread, and biscuits and gravy.
Potter’s Wheel Basics: Bowls, Cups, and More
Instructor: Rebecca Nightingale
September 4 - November 16
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00
Beginners are encouraged to join this class. While most class time will be focused on making functional cups and bowls, as the students improve, other forms will be introduced. Students will learn basic techniques of how to throw clay on a potter’s wheel, decorate the surface of their pieces, and glaze to create beautiful vessels.
Rebecca recently moved to Wellsville from Rochester and has been a full-time potter going on 11 years. She enjoys carving the clay into different patterns and allows the glaze to work its magic over the varied texture. With a primary focus on making utilitarian pots, she often thinks about the function in how it relates to the finished form.
Advanced Wheel Methods: Making Ceramic Pairs and Sets
Instructor: Kimberly Grossman
September 4 - November 16
Wednesdays 2:00 - 4:00
This class is recommended for those who have experience with clay. Students will focus on developing nuance and finishing their wheel thrown forms. They will gain confidence and hone their skills through each step of the making process as the instructor guides students through both assignments and self-directed projects.
Kimberly plans to focus primarily on making ceramic works in pairs during this session. For example, if cream and sugar are preferred in someone’s coffee, this student would be shown how to make holders for these additives, a mug, and possibly a spoon that match. The repetition of similar surface decoration techniques and color application on multiple works help to unify different parts of the same set.
Handbuilding: Making Ceramic Coil, Slab, and Pinch Pots
Instructor: Marsha VanVlack
September 4 - November 16
Wednesday 2:00-4:00 OR Thursday 1:00-3:00
*please specify which day you're registering for by emailing wcac.studio.manager@gmail.com*
Students of all levels are welcome to join this class. Different methods of constructing works from clay will be covered to achieve a variety of results. These methods include but are not limited to coil-built, slab-built, and pinched pots. Experienced students will continue to develop their own skills and processes with assistance from the instructor.
While Marsha enjoys different methods of alternative firing, she will focus more on demonstrating how to make different shapes and textures to provide contrast during this session.
