Fire a wood kiln with Bill Moon! Open to intermediate and advanced ceramic artists, functional and sculptural. The class will make, bisque and glaze work at Wellsville Creative, and the final wood firing will be in Bill’s new catenary arch wood kiln. How to make work that is conducive to that wood fired magic will be discussed during class. Learn about flashing slips, wadding, and special wood-firing glazes such as shinos.
Due to the preparation that goes into wood firing, this class will be a hybrid of 4 classes held at WCAC, 4 classes at the kiln site, and 2 classes for independent work/ break weeks. Students who enroll will need to make the firing dates a priority, as everyone will be assigned a shift to help fire the kiln. Being a collaborative and community based experience, wood firing is special in that it brings everyone closer together through hard work and conversation around one common goal – to start a fire.
